A high-level NTU delegation comprising NTU President Prof Subra Suresh, Pro-Chancellors Mr Chandra Das, Mr Othman Haron Eusofe and Ms Jennie Chua, NTU Chairman Koh Boon Hwee and six Trustees including Mr Goh Sin Teck, Mr Inderjit Singh and Ms Lien Siaou-Sze, visited the Alibaba Group headquarters in Hangzhou on 6 September. Alibaba is NTU’s partner in a joint research institute on artificial intelligence and also has a talent programme for postgraduates.

At the Alibaba Executive Centre, the NTU delegation gained a greater understanding of the e-commerce and technology giant’s history, current operations and corporate social responsibility efforts. Among its many initiatives, as of April 2019, 500 million Alipay users have contributed to the planting of 100 million trees in China, as part of Alibaba’s efforts in making China a greener place.

The visit, hosted by Alibaba Vice Presidents Drs Jin Rong, Hua Xiansheng and Jia Yangqing, rode on the strong collaboration ties between the two organisations. NTU and Alibaba will continue in their efforts to research and develop technology for the good of society.

While in Hangzhou, Prof Suresh and NTU leaders met Mr Cheng Yuechong, Vice Governor of Zhejiang province. Mr Cheng shared about the economic and societal development of Zhejiang, a place where NTU has many collaborations and alumni. Building on the current solid foundation, NTU and Zhejiang province are committed to deepening their education and research collaboration.

Earlier this year, researchers from NTU and Zhejiang University scored a research breakthrough in devising a unique way for photons to transmit information and energy which could lead to future applications in lasers and optical devices.

The annual NTU China Convocation was held at Hangzhou, with 278 graduands from six postgraduate programmes graduating this year. An additional group of eight has completed the prestigious Lien Ying Chow Legacy Fellowship programme, which supports leaders from Singapore and China in research, furthering bilateral ties.

In conjunction with the NTU China Convocation, NTU held an alumni conference on 7 Sep on riding the global technology wave which has led to transformative changes and opportunities in Asia.

Dr Lo Li-Chun, Chief Financial Officer, Protrend Management Consulting Co., Ltd. spoke on “Chinese Reforms and the New Political and Economic Order in Europe and Asia”, while NTU economics professor Prof Tan Kong Yam gave a lecture on the US-China trade and technology issues.
