Firing A Passion: Pottery Practices of Singapore

Date: 2 – 10 March 2013
Venue: Innovation Centre, Block 1, Multi-Purpose Hall
Opening Hours: 10:00 am – 5:30 pm (Monday to Friday)

This exhibition presented the history of the local pottery industry, one of Singapore's few cottage industries, from the mid-20th century. It focused on the ancient technology of wood-firing in a dragon kiln, and the nostalgic and communal experiences of those who were involved. We traced the different stages of its development, and the challenges and changes it faced from the colonial era to recent decades when pottery is no longer produced purely for functional purposes or according to market demands. Pottery making is an art, practised by a steady and active artist community in Singapore. More than 90 pottery artworks by nine artists and 20 artefacts were on display at this exhibition.
