Her passport to green business

First-year student Rajvi Sapre is building business savvy and expanding her horizons with the NBS Global Leaders Programme

When Rajvi Sapre chose the NBS Global Leaders Programme (NGL) at NTU over offers from other local universities, it wasn’t just the financial perks of the scholar’s programme that stood out.

She was drawn to the personal development opportunities offered, including a guaranteed year at a famed business school like the Haas School of Business of the University of California, Berkeley, mentorship from a corporate honcho, and leadership and communication training.

Five months into the programme, something exciting further affirmed her decision.

“I was happy to learn that we’ll be going on a week-long overseas trip next semester to work with a company on their sustainability issues,” says the first-year Nanyang Business School (NBS) student, who hopes to build a career in corporate sustainability.

A nature lover who enjoys jogging in the Jurong Lake District, Rajvi initially considered studying environmental science, before realising that she could drive sustainability in any corporate role.

That led her to pursue a double degree in Accountancy and Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (AI). Accountancy allows her to speak the language of business, while data science and AI equip her with future-ready skills.

As part of the NBS Global Leaders Programme, Rajvi takes core courses with the pioneer cohort of 35 students.

Her business ethics class left a lasting impression, as they studied the Bhopal gas leak – an industrial disaster that killed thousands in India and even affected friends of Rajvi’s father.

“The case studies showed me the amount of power and impact business leaders can have, and how things can go wrong if they don’t act responsibly.”

For now, Rajvi is still exploring roles that can drive change and influence corporate sustainability efforts. She’s open to working in finance, accounting, data or consulting, and the programme’s curated industry workshops offer her a window into different roles.

In her first semester alone, Rajvi attended two “crash courses” on private equity and finance, and learnt about wealth management during a visit to the Bank of Singapore.

She cannot wait to be matched with a mentor later in her studies – a senior business leader who can advise her on career paths and offer connections.

Rajvi is also looking forward to her year of overseas immersion in the US, in her third year. “I’ve not been outside Asia,” she says.

“Living and studying in the US will be very different from Singapore, but it’s so important to step out of my comfort zone, learn to adapt to all situations and be independent.”
