6 study nooks you'll love (Freshmen, take note)

NTU has one of the world's most beautiful campuses. Be inspired at some of these scenic study spots

by Lau Yan Xi

Nanyang Business School building

Not just a hangout for business school students, the biggest wooden building on campus and in Asia, bathed in natural light, evokes the calm of a forest. Its open layout features thoughtfully designed seating areas, with a mix of stylish desks, padded benches and tall bar stools that give it the feel of a chic co-working space. Grab a seat near the café and salad bar, and get comfy.

“The vibe around this study zone is really nice. I like to use the individual breakout rooms with screens, as they are super helpful for prepping for presentations, and take the pressure off worrying about disturbing others.”

– Raine Ho, History

The Hive

NTU’s iconic building has an airy feel, circular classrooms and a windy rooftop garden. Sunlit alcoves curve around the building’s core, creating nooks perfect for solo study or deep thought. It’s also great for low-key people watching. The irregularly shaped columns and textured walls reminiscent of prehistoric carvings add a raw, earthy charm when you need a vision break.

“The Hive has a different mood compared to other places on campus. It feels more open and takes away my stress. I find it easier to focus when I study here.”

– Klarissa Witania, Information Engineering & Media

The Arc

Minimalist and sleek, the study rooms at The Arc are perfect for when you want peace and strong air conditioning. With floor-to-ceiling windows, spacious tables and large sofas, they’re great for solo study or small-group work.

“It’s relatively distraction-free and the glass windows let in natural light. I can book the Project Discussion Rooms, which come with large screens and power outlets, making them suitable for group discussions with my friends.”

– Areeishsharm Aruldas, Bioengineering

Lee Wee Nam Library

This North Spine library is the classic NTU study zone, with six floors of study tables, computers and project rooms. You can veg out at Hygge at Level 5, which has bean bags and soothing music, perfect for a short nap.

“It’s super quiet, just right for getting into the zone during finals season. Students can bring in covered drinks to refuel while studying, which is a big plus!”

Shana Tan, Business

ADM Library

Tucked within the School of Art, Design & Media, this artsy hideout is where the cool kids (and cinephiles) chill. With shelves of DVDs, retro video cassettes and a seriously good fiction collection, it feels more like a creative retreat than your typical library. Its moody, industrial-chic interior with metallic accents offers a refreshing change of scene.

“When I need a break from studying, I’ll lounge in one of the rooms here and watch DVDs, like my favourite film, Spirited Away.”

Koh Jia Wen, Visual Communication

NIE Library

A hidden gem on campus, this tranquil library comes with some of the comfiest seating – plus its own café. And it’s just a stone’s throw from the North Spine.

This is one of the most relaxing spots in NTU. There’s ample seating, with desks right by the windows overlooking beautiful greenery, so it doesn’t feel as claustrophobic as some other libraries. You can even catch a stunning sunset from the top floor.”
