Introduction

STEM curriculum design and implementation should be organised using a coherent framework to guide teaching, learning and assessment. Several STEM curriculum frameworks and models have been discussed in the literature. Diverse STEM integration frameworks and models are undergirded by educational philosophies, theories, and practices. In this course, participants will learn about the different conceptualisations and approaches to STEM curriculum integration. This includes the educational theories and concepts that underpin these frameworks and models. They will understand the differences between frameworks and models, compare various STEM education frameworks and apply these ideas to constructing a STEM integration framework or model for their own context.


Upon completion of this course, participants would be able to: 
  1. describe the different STEM integration frameworks and models;
  2. critique the strengths and weaknesses of the diverse STEM integration frameworks and models;
  3. discuss the philosophies and theories that undergird each STEM integration framework or model including the meriSTEM@NIE STEM Quartet;
  4. explain how the STEM integration frameworks and models are applied in STEM curriculum design; and
  5. construct a STEM integration framework or model for a school/institutional context.

Teo Tang Wee

TEO Tang Wee is an Associate Professor in the Natural Sciences and Science Education (Academic Group) in the National Institute of Education. She is also the Co-Head of the Multi-centric Education, Research and Industry STEM Centre (meriSTEM@NIE, https://www.nie.edu.sg/meristem). Dr Teo Tang Wee is an Associate Professor in the Natural Sciences and Science Education (Academic Group), National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. She is also the Co-Head of the Multi-centric Education, Research and Industry STEM Centre at NIE (meriSTEM@NIE). In 2007-2011, she received the National Institute of Education Overseas Graduate Scholarship to pursue her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. After graduation, she joined NIE/NTU as an Assistant Professor. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2018. Tang Wee has experience as a STEM educator for more than 20 years. She was a Chemistry teacher at the National University of Singapore (NUS) High School of Mathematics and Science, a specialised STEM school for gifted and talented science and mathematics students in Singapore. In 2007-2011, she worked as a research assistant and evaluator on National Science Foundation (USA) funded STEM education projects. She spent 18 months at a specialised STEM school in the US to conduct her PhD research study. From 2011, she had obtained continued funding (total value of approximately SGD3 million as Principal Investigator/Project Leader) from local and international organisations and companies (e.g., Ministry of Education, Temasek Foundation, and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation [APEC]) to conduct research and outreach work in STEM education. Tang Wee has received awards in research, teaching and service. In 2012, she received the Nanyang Award (Teamwork). In 2018, she was the recipient of the NIE Research Excellence Award and the Xilong Scientific - Singapore National Institute of Chemistry Industry Award in Chemistry Education. In 2021, she received the Asia-Pacific Science Education (Brill) Best Paper Award for her paper about special needs science education. In 2021, she received the NIE Excellence in Teaching Award and the NIE Long Service Award. An equity scholar in STEM education, her current research focuses on issues of inclusivity in classrooms with under achievers and students with special education needs. She also studies gender issues in STEM education and published a chapter in a UNESCO report in 2020. She is an editorial board member of Asian Women and an Associate Editor of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Science Education, Pedagogies: An International Journal, and the Cultural Studies of Science Education. She is also the Founding Co-Editor-in-Chief of Research in Integrated STEM Education (Publisher: Brill).
