Introduction

This course introduces learners to renewable energy systems and distributed generation technologies. Learners will explore the design and application of systems such as solar photovoltaics, wind turbines, fuel cells, micro-turbines, and micro-hydro generation—whether connected to a utility grid or a microgrid. The course also covers energy storage solutions and smart grid technologies, including advanced metering infrastructure, demand-side and response management, and electric vehicles. By the end of the course, learners will gain practical knowledge to support sustainable, energy-efficient solutions for the future. Ideal for those interested in green energy and smart grid innovations.

This course is credit-bearing (3 AU) and stackable to:
  • Graduate Certificate in Power Engineering (9 AU)
  • FlexiMasters in Power Engineering (15 AU)
  • MSc in Power Engineering (30 AU)
Learners will receive their Statement of Accomplishment (for a grade of D and above) or Certificate of Participation for this course—dependent upon their assessment performance.

  • Explain the importance of environmentally friendly electrical energy systems in global trends.
  • Analyse how distributed generation systems in microgrids enhance reliability and reduce network losses.
  • Describe how renewable energy systems based on energy sources such as solar and wind are independent of fuel price fluctuations and do not diminish over time.
  • Differentiate various energy storage devices and evaluate their applications in energy systems.
  • Explain the concepts and technologies of the smart grid.
  • Examine the critical issues in the development and deployment of the smart grid.
This course is suitable for learners who are working or intending to work in the power engineering industry. Prior knowledge in smart grids will be an advantage.
