The Master of Arts in Educational Management (MAEM) programme aims to enable you to develop the knowledge, skills and capability to your organisations effectively at a time of rapid change. 

This programme is designed for individuals who hold management positions in the education service (e.g. principals, vice-principals, heads of department and teachers with positions of responsibility and MOE officers); as well as individuals with managerial experiences from other learning and training enterprises (e.g. military, nursing and other private and tertiary educational institutions).

This programme pursues three broad aims:

  1. To enable aspiring leaders in education to become more informed about critical issues in educational management, and thus to apply intellectual approaches to their work
  2. To help them cope positively and effectively with the management challenges that are currently impacting on education
  3. To enable them to acquire a recognised and valued postgraduate award. 

The topics covered include:

  • research methods in education (quantitative and qualitative);
  • organisational learning and development;
  • philosophy of education;
  • interdisciplinary thinking for educational leaders;
  • ethics and leadership for educators;
  • assessment quality and standards;
  • supervisory leadership and curriculum design;
  • servant leadership;
  • theory and practice of teachers’ professional learning; teachers as leaders;
  • mentoring for professional development and leadership succession;
  • management of educational technology applications;
  • comparative issues in education;
  • mentoring for professional development and leadership succession;
  • school marketing;
  • school and organisational effectiveness;
  • historical and philosophical foundations of theories of educational policy;
  • key issues in education policy;
  • and leadership in early childhood and primary education.
  • A good bachelor’s degree, or a relevant NTU FlexiMasters with good grades
  • At least two years of managerial experience in either the public or private sector. You should be heads of school departments, vice-principals or principals of schools, inspectors and senior officers of MOE, faculty members of universities and polytechnics or supervisors and managers in the public or private sectors

There are generally two intakes a year (January and August). You are advised to visit the website and look out for NIE’s announcements in May/June and November/December to confirm if the programme will be open for application at any particular intake.

Applicants who are currently working with sponsors, donors or financial institutions to fund their studies, are encouraged to submit their applications early to NIE so as not to miss out on our application period.

There are two options within this programme. You are required to either:

  • Complete 6 courses plus a dissertation (Dissertation option), or
  • Complete 7 courses plus MEM932 Critical Inquiry (2 AU)

You do not have to make the decision when you apply. The decision on what option to select is usually made upon completion of four courses.
