NTU scientists outsmart resistant bacteria
NTU scientists are pioneering strategies to stay one step ahead of resistant bacteria.
One NTU research team from NTU's School of Biological Sciences developed a compound that inhibits an enzyme crucial for energy generation in Mycobacterium abscessus.
Collaborating with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research, another group of researchers from NTU's Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine uncovered how the same bacterium resists infection by viruses.
To understand how Pseudomonas aeruginosa colonises its host, researchers led by the Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering at NTU and Imperial College London investigated the molecular structure of the "weapon" it uses to load and fire toxins into rival bacteria and other cells.
Their research opens avenues for new treatments that target resistant bacteria, as well as novel ways of disarming such bacteria.
