As the new semester gets underway, a hall room that reflects your vibe can help make hall feel more like home. Answer these four questions to get your four-letter Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) result, then discover the room style that suits you best.

1. At social events, do you introduce yourself to new people (Extroverted), or mostly talk to the ones you already know (Introverted)?

2. Do you often ask “what if” (INtuition), or do you prefer to be grounded in reality (Sensing)?

3. When making big decisions, do you tend to follow your head (Thinking) or your heart (Feeling)?

4. Do you use organising tools like schedules and lists (Judging), or keep things open-ended, spontaneous and flexible (Perceiving)?

INTJ & ENTJ
“Hall is for studying and sleeping”

Logical and efficient, you’re likely to value practical, minimalist décor and good lighting for late-night study sessions. Think Japandi-inspired utility, with wooden desk organisers and low-maintenance succulents or faux plants that can effortlessly last the semester.

You treat your room as a productivity hub. Clutter is the enemy, so must-haves include mono-colour storage organisers and trays for gadgets and papers, a Muji-style desk lamp and a small whiteboard for tracking deadlines and semester goals. While everyone else’s rooms may descend into varying levels of chaos, yours will remain one of the neatest on the entire floor.

“My cosy dreamcore retreat”

Imaginative and expressive, you find solace in a cosy dreamcore-inspired space. Friends may spot your favourite books, a grid organiser displaying photobooth strips, vintage postcards and old concert tickets, alongside treasured keepsakes such as a brass trinket box, Smiskis or Jellycat plushies.

Lean into the whimsy with an LED cloud lamp or a soft light diffuser that bathes your room in a warm amber glow. If you’re into cottagecore, consider pressed flowers in photo frames, crochet throw blankets, fairy lights and floral bedding. Just don’t get too carried away – hall rules prohibit Blu-Tack, tape, nails and other permanent fixtures.

“My tech innovation hub”

You’re the kind of person who comes up with a brilliant idea at 2am and somehow ends up discussing a startup by lunchtime. You’ll rock the industrial-tech aesthetic, with items such as a metal grid wall organiser for random Post-it notes and photo prints, a rolling metal cart parked beside your desk for snacks and gadgets, neon LED lights and a chrome desk lamp.

You’ll likely want an additional monitor and a mechanical keyboard for late-night analytical projects. Your vibe is matte black or slate grey, dialled up with cyberpunk neon. For comfort, get a canvas bean bag that you can share with your roomie – it also doubles as a drop spot for your belongings.

ISTJ & ESTJ
“Don’t touch it – it’s there for a reason”

Hyper-organised, you like knowing exactly where everything is. Your ideal space has plenty of storage compartments and desk trays, and since you’re a fan of categorising, keep some sticky tags handy to label them.

A dark academia or modern classic aesthetic may be your vibe, with bedding and pillowcases in maroon, burgundy, navy or cream, paired with a Persian-inspired rug, a leather desk mat and wooden photo frames.

You appreciate spaces that are both practical and put-together, so a warm-toned lamp or two will help keep your room functional without sacrificing style.

“Busy hobby-maxxing”

Always on the move, you want your space to be a practical, life-maxxing hub for all your projects and adventures. With so many competing interests, keep a few trays and organisers on hand for all your odds and ends, whether that’s a Nintendo Switch, a portable speaker, camera gear or random tech gadgets.

You go for comfort and convenience: a cooling pillow or bolster to ease into after a long day, and monochrome bedding to get you through the semester. You also appreciate gear that makes life easier, such as rechargeable foldable LED lights and a big charging brick to host all your cables. Remember to leave a little room for the next hobby you’re going to pick up.

“Creative maximalism”

Your room is a canvas for self-expression, with pops of colour and pieces that reflect your personality. Think bold shades of blue, green and ruby amid calming neutrals.

Creative projects are likely to spill into every corner, from canvas paintings and clay sculptures to a curated display of art prints – basically, anything that showcases your inner world.

To fully unlock the aesthetic, add a tufted rug in a fun shape, like a fruit or sunny-side up, plus a clothes rack for all your mood-based outfits. A pegboard is a must-have for displaying enamel pins, keychains and stray paintbrushes. Keep a foldable mini table tucked away too – you’ll need it for random creative projects.

“Welcome to my zen sanctuary”

You have too much love to give to leave your room feeling bare. As the “mum” or “dad” among friends, you’re big on comfort and wellbeing. Your room doubles as a cosy sanctuary for heart-to-heart conversations.

You gravitate towards an eco-chic aesthetic, filling your space with mini plants (faux ones count too) and bedding or décor in earthy shades of terracotta, soft brown, cream, sage green or muted purple.

For peak zen, add an essential oil diffuser, scented candles and warm corner lighting to make your room feel like an indie café. A few Jellycats, collectible figurines or other comforting keepsakes won’t go amiss either – after all, every sanctuary needs its guardians.

“My room has everything you need”

Your room radiates ultimate comfort energy. As the go-to person for random necessities and mid-semester pick-me-ups, you’ve created a space that instantly makes people feel at home. Think crochet or waffle-knit duvet covers, throw pillows and floral bedding in soft almond and cream tones. You like a touch of greenery, so opt for dried eucalyptus or lavender, which look great and require zero watering.

Prop a magnetic acrylic weekly planner on your desk – deadlines feel less intimidating when your organisers look cute. Latte or matcha lovers can keep a milk frother handy for morning study sessions. As the designated snack provider, you’ll probably want a woven snack basket within reach of anyone in need of a munchie and a listening ear.
