Introduction

The objective of this course is to equip the students with basic understanding of the behaviour of reinforced concrete structures and to develop the skill to analyze and design basic concrete members.

This course is credit-bearing (3AU) and stackable to:
  • Specialist Certificate in Civil Infrastructure (12 AU)
  • Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering (136 AU)

This course will cover the following areas:
  1. Basic design concepts: basic layout of concrete structures, loading;
  2. Basic material properties: concrete and reinforcing steel;
  3. Analysis of structures: limit state design, simplification of framed structures, moment redistribution;
  4. Analysis and design of flexural members; Shear; Bond and anchorage;
  5. Serviceability; One-way and two-way slabs;
  6. Compression members;
  7. Foundation: footings. Current building code and standards are referred to extensively in this course.
This Specialist Certificate will enable NTU's Environmental Engineering graduates to apply for registration as Professional Engineers (Civil), if other requirements (4 years of relevant practical experience in engineering, FEE & PPEE examinations, interview) are also fulfilled.
