NTU Singapore scientist Chen Xiaodong receives research award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

The award recognises Prof Chen’s outstanding research work and lifetime contributions in the field of materials science, and includes an invitation to spend up to one year at a German research institution cooperating with specialist colleagues on research projects of his choice.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, established by the government of the Federal Republic of Germany, grants about 20 Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Awards annually to internationally renowned scientists and scholars from abroad. 

Prof Chen was nominated by his research partner, Prof. Dr. Joachim P. Spatz, from the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research, Heidelberg, Germany.

Prof Chen is currently the President’s Chair Professor in Materials Science and Engineering at NTU Singapore, and the Director of the Max Planck – NTU Joint Lab for Artificial Senses. 

His latest research projects and innovations include 3D-printed flexible electronics, stretchable sensors and super capacitors, ultrafast-charging lithium-ion batteries, and integrated nano-bio and cyber-human interfaces and systems.

An award-winning scientist, previous accolades conferred on Prof Chen include the Mitsui Chemicals-SNIC Industry Award in Materials and Nano-chemistry, by the Singapore National Institute of Singapore in 2018; the Advanced Materials Hall of Fame by Wiley-VCH in 2018; the Nanyang Award in Research Excellence in 2017; and the NRF Investigatorship Award by the National Research Foundation, Singapore, in 2016. He was also conferred a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2016.
