Corporate Partners are one of the important pillars of CEM's research platform and play a critical role in the research by assisting to identify the right research topics from the field, providing feedback to assure the relevance of the research, and applying and testing the new knowledge in their emerging market practices.

Mr Steve McGrath

Partner, Bain & Company

Steve has been a private equity investor and venture builder in Silicon Valley and Asia for over 25 years, with deep experience in early-stage and cross-border venture investing, new venture incubation & acceleration and corporate venture capital.

At Shell Ventures Steve established and led Shell’s corporate venture capital platforms in Silicon Valley and China. He Chaired the investment committee and had global responsibility for investments in the Mobility sector, with a particular focus on cross-border investments and the China-Silicon Valley nexus.

For over a decade Steve was CEO in a New York-based private equity firm that invests in pioneering companies creating new sectors. Spencer Trask has co-founded and funded from inception startups that have collectively created in excess of $500 Billion in enterprise value. Steve’s focus was on building companies in the advanced analytics, machine intelligence and enterprise innovation sectors.

Steve was also a founding Partner of Strategos – a leading international strategy consulting firm co-founded with business guru Gary Hamel, helping G1000 global clients innovate in fundamentally new ways by “Bringing the Silicon Valley Inside.”

A dual UK-US citizen, Steve has lived and worked extensively in Asia, Europe and the US and has deep networks in the corporate, innovation and investment ecosystems of each.

Steve holds an MA in Physics and Theoretical Physics from Cambridge University, England and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
