Scenarios Competition 2022 (Regional Finals)
About the competition: Since 2016, Shell has been
inviting university students to imagine the future of more and cleaner
energy in Asian and Middle Eastern cities and how it will change the way
people live, work and play. Scenarios provide plausible alternative views
of the future. Building and using scenarios can help students explore what the
future might look like and the likely challenges of living in it. In this
competition, REP students (Team Seashell) had to imagine how their chosen city
in APEC would look like in 2050 and the way people in that city will live, work
and play. In the case of Team Seashell, they picked Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
After winning the National Finals in February this year, the team went on to clinch the championship title for the Regional Finals.

Product/Proposal: Building upon the previous report Team Seashell submitted in the National Finals, the team improved upon their 5000-word report depicting 2 distinct scenarios of how people will live, work, and play in Ho Chi Minh City in 2050. The team also made a 20-minute video illustrating their scenarios which was sent to the judges before the competition day.
Description: In this report, Team Seashell analyses the status quo of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), and evaluates how the critical uncertainties, namely the economic and environmental aspects, may affect the city’s future. The team postulated two futures: Cờ đỏ and Sao vàng.
1) Cờ đỏ - The Red Flag: In ‘The Red Flag’, the city sticks to the status quo of a tertiary-focused economy, whilst efforts to deal with the environment remain the same. The city is powered by 7G technology, and many people’s lives revolve around the Embodied Virtual Reality Universe (EVRU) and the Internet of Things. Although these ground-breaking technologies have revolutionised the way some residents live, work, and play, this future is not perfect.
2) Sao vàng - The Golden Star: In ‘The Golden Star’, the city transitions to a secondary-focused economy, whilst efforts to deal with the environment increase. The new economy is powered by Advanced Additive Manufacturing technology. This technology propels the city to become a leading high-end manufacturing hub in the region. It also allows the city to successfully improve their clean energy systems and adopt new ones. The environment is also in a better state than it was in the past.
