A power company in the US once conducted a brainstorming session for a solution to remove the ice building up on high tension power cables during winter. The initial proposed solution was to attract bears in the region to climb the poles and shake the ice off the cables, which hence required placing of honey pots on top of the poles. A rather complicated and impractical solution, many would think.

The brainstorming then went in the direction of how to get the honey pots on the poles, and helicopters were suggested for this. In the planning for the implementation of this, they realised something huge - helicopters were not just good for the placing of the honey pots, but the downwash of the helicopter actually removed the ice from the cables by itself! The final, most cost-effective and practical solution was thus found. Nowadays, helicopters are chartered to fly at low altitudes to blow the ice off high tension power cables to prevent buildup.

Moral of the story? No idea should be rejected in its infancy as it may always lead to a new discovery. Indeed, many discoveries and inventions were the results of accidents and laughable ideas.
