CME0002 Singapore Primary Mathematics: Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract
The Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (C-P-A) sequence is the key instructional strategy for the development of primary mathematics concepts in Singapore. This workshop is designed for primary mathematics educators and parents who wish to examine the rationale behind the CPA approach and learn how to use concrete materials, pictorial representations, and abstract symbols purposefully to develop conceptual understanding, mathematical reasoning and mathematical communication. Through guided discussions, hands-on experiences, and questioning, participants will be better equipped to implement the CPA approach to create learning experiences that support meaningful mathematical understanding.

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:
- Explain the principles and benefits of the Singapore Mathematics approach and the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) framework.
- Use appropriate concrete materials and pictorial representations for teaching primary mathematics concepts.
- Guide young learners in moving from concrete experiences to pictorial representations and then to abstract notation.
The course will cover the following areas:
- The Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) instructional sequence.
- Development of mathematics concepts through Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) representations.
- Learning to connect the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) representations effectively.
Dr Joseph Yeo Kai Kow, Mathematics & Mathematics Education (MME)
Dr Joseph Yeo Kai Kow is a Senior Lecturer in the Mathematics and Mathematics Education Department at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is the consultant for the lower primary Targeting Mathematics series. As a teacher educator and a multiple-time recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Commendation Award at NIE, he is involved in training pre-service and in-service mathematics teachers at primary and secondary levels and has also conducted numerous professional development courses for teachers and Head of Departments in Singapore and overseas. Before joining the National Institute of Education in 2000, he held the post of Vice Principal and Head of Mathematics Department in secondary schools.
