CPE0004 Sporting Excellence, Academic Success and Well-Being: Helping Student-Athletes Work Smart
In Singapore, the education of our youth has long been a shared national priority. While schools, parents and coaches strongly believe in holistic development, they often face a common challenge-how to help student-athletes pursue sporting excellence-an excellent avenue for holistic development-without compromising academic success. This practical and discussion-based workshop equips parents, teachers and coaches with shared frameworks, real-life case studies and evidence-informed strategies to support the development of student-athletes. Participants will explore common stress points such as time conflicts, examination periods, training load, burnout, communication gaps and expectation management. Through guided discussions, planning tools, collaborative problem-solving and a wealth of examples and case studies, participants will learn how to align the home, school and training environments to support both performance and well-being. By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with practical tools for scheduling and prioritisation, communication strategies for high-pressure periods, and guiding principles for decision-making to support long-term student-athlete development.
By the end of this course, participants should be able to:
- Understand the unique challenges faced by student-athletes in balancing sport and academics.
- Apply practical strategies for time management, planning and prioritisation.
- Support healthy training, recovery and long-term athlete development.
- Apply guiding principles to make informed decisions during high-pressure periods such as examinations and competitions.
- Develop a shared framework to support sustainable and holistic student-athlete development.
The course will cover the following areas:
- The student-athlete landscape in Singapore
- Principles of athlete development
- Planning and prioritisation
- Managing expectations
- Supporting dual performance
