CME0003 Singapore Primary Mathematics: Model Method I (Part-Whole Model)
The model method is a powerful strategy used by Singapore students to solve mathematical word problems. The use of rectangular bars in the model method helps students visually unpack word problems through diagrammatic representation of the relationships between key quantities in the word problem. This workshop introduces part-whole model for solving word problems of varying complexities involving Whole Numbers and Fractions. This workshop also demonstrates how part-whole model can be used to tackle challenging mathematics word problems.
By the end of this course, participants should be able to:
- Explain the fundamental principles of the Singapore model method and how rectangular bars diagrammatically represent relationships between key quantities in word problems;
- Draw and utilise both part-whole model to solve mathematical word problems of varying complexities involving whole numbers and fractions;
- Guide learners to tackle challenging mathematics word problems using part-whole model.
The course will cover the following areas:
- Introduction to part-whole model;
- Solving word problems using part-whole model;
- Learning to solve challenging word problems using part-whole model.
