The National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore, is the national teacher education institute and we are proud to be an integral part of the nation’s education system. We play a key role in the initial preparation of Singapore teachers and the provision of teacher professional and school leadership development programmes. Our university-based teacher education programmes leverage the strong partnerships that the NIE has with the Ministry of Education and Singapore schools to develop teachers who are grounded in theory and research, and strong in practice. 

The NIE, a multidisciplinary university institute that offers undergraduate and graduate education programmes in diverse academic disciplines, is committed to empowering students with the essential skills, knowledge, and mindset to analyse, tackle, and resolve challenges in various career pathways, both within and beyond the realm of education.

Our education programmes are underpinned by a '4-Life' Learning Philosophy: Life-long, Life-deep, Life-wide and Life-wise. As an education institute within a world-class research university, the NIE also offers rigorous graduate education in the form of Masters and Doctoral degrees for local and international students. The NIE supports our nation’s life-long learning endeavours through courses in relevant professional and life skills. We also provide education consultancy services through the NIE International Office.

The NIE faculty are also actively involved in research in our respective academic disciplines. Given the NIE's unique position within a research-intensive technological university, the NIE promotes an interdisciplinary approach to research, embracing the rich diversity within its academic community.

Our education research strengthens the research-practice-policy nexus continually, and advances knowledge in various education domains. Research in other academic disciplines contributes to knowledge creation for the respective academic communities and produce impact that addresses societal challenges. 

Our work is summed up in our mission statement: Inspiring Learning, Transforming Teaching and Advancing Research. As we move forward in delivering our mission, we will continue to strengthen our evergreen areas of teacher education and professional development as well as disciplinary knowledge and curriculum.  At the same time, we have identified five areas of strategic growth that will help propel the institution to achieving our vision of leading the future of education. These are Child and Human Development, Values and Ethics, Science of Learning, Emerging Technologies, and Assessment and Evaluation.
