Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programme

Overview

The English Language and Literature (ELL) department offers a program of study leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the fields of Applied Linguistics, English language/Literacy education, Literature, and Literature education. While our PhD students are encouraged to develop broad research expertise, they cultivate a primary specialization in a chosen area.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have strong academic qualifications, relevant research preparation, and the ability to pursue advanced study in their proposed field of research.

Depending on their educational background and previous institutions, applicants may be required to submit additional documents. Detailed and up-to-date information on entry requirements, English language competency, and application procedures can be found here.

Shortlisted applicants may be invited for an interview as part of the selection process.

PhD students may complete the program on a full-time or part-time basis. Information on candidature, coursework, the Qualifying Examination, thesis requirements, and the Oral Examination can be found  here.


Scholarships

Academically outstanding full-time students are eligible to apply for the Nanyang President’s Graduate Scholarship, Nanyang Technological University Research Scholarship, or the National Institute of Education Scholarship. More information on scholarships can be found here
