'I am exactly where I want to be': The primary school dropout living life on his own timeline

CNA featured the inspiring journey of 25-year-old Presslee Chng, who spent nine years outside Singapore’s school system after his family faced financial and housing difficulties during his childhood. He eventually returned to formal education at NorthLight School, where the encouragement of his teachers helped him rebuild his confidence and rediscover a sense of possibility through education.

Mr Chng subsequently pursued his studies at the Institute of Technical Education and Republic Polytechnic, where he excelled academically despite facing personal challenges, including the loss of his father during his polytechnic studies.

A six-month internship as an assistant teacher at NorthLight School eventually inspired him to consider a career in education. After receiving the Ministry of Education Teaching Award, Mr Chng is now pursuing his undergraduate studies at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University, with the goal of becoming a Physical Education teacher. Drawing inspiration from the teachers who supported him along the way, he hopes to similarly make a difference in the lives of his future students.
