Dorothy Cheung Memorial Fund
The Dorothy Cheung Memorial Fund supports two arts series:
i. the Dorothy Cheung Concert Series, and
ii. the Dorothy Cheung Arts Appreciation Series (on-campus and learning journeys)
It was established through the generous donation of NTU Associate Professor John Cheung (School of Mechanical and Production Engineering) in memory of his loving wife Associate Professor Dorothy Cheung (School of Civil and Structural Engineering). Strongly believing in the value of the arts, Prof Cheung entrusted a significant portion of his life savings to NTU to ensure that the community continues to support the Arts and enrich students’ cultural life for generations to come.
The Memorial Fund seeks to promote creative and critical engagement in the Arts through concerts, exhibitions, talks, and workshops by local and international artists as well as collaborative arts projects involving students and staff. These activities foster understanding of the Arts and an appreciation of the place for the Arts in everyday lives.
The fund is managed by the Visual and Performing Arts Department at the National Institute of Education.
Through a regular programme of accessible lunchtime performances, the Concert Series brings high-quality live music to campus, enriching the learning environment and creating a shared space for the NTU community to pause, connect, and be inspired. It also broadens cultural exposure by showcasing diverse musical traditions and supporting meaningful exchanges between artists, students, and staff. Ultimately, the Concert Series energises the NTU campus—bringing people together through music and reaffirming the arts as a vibrant, essential part of holistic education and everyday life.
Concerts are generally held at NTU LT19A each Wednesday from 12:45 pm to 1:45 pm. Periodically, performances may also take place at the National Institute of Education during alternative time slots.
Spanning multiple art forms and driven by inspiring, artist-led experiences, the Arts Appreciation Series invites the NTU community to experience, discover, and create—through fresh perspectives, hands-on moments, and behind-the-scenes insights into artistic practice. With space to reflect, discuss, and make, the series sparks curiosity and builds confidence in arts participation, champions student-led initiatives alongside professional practice, and empowers bold experimentation beyond one’s discipline—strengthening the arts as a vibrant, everyday part of campus life and the way we see and think.

This series complements the Dorothy Cheung Arts Appreciation Series by enabling experiential learning through curated cultural exposures and engagements. Through guided visits, post-visit reflections, and opportunities to engage with artists and cultural practitioners in local and overseas venues, the Learning Journey Series helps students build the habits and language of arts appreciation beyond the university campus. It encourages open-minded observation and dialogue, strengthens cultural literacy and global awareness, and supports students in connecting artistic experiences to their own learning, wellbeing, and sense of community.
We welcome proposals from the NTU community. To apply for Dorothy Cheung Memorial Fund sponsorship for an arts event or activity, please submit your completed application form to [email protected] with the subject “DCMF Sponsor Request”.

As the Fund receives a high volume of requests, support will be prioritised for arts activities that demonstrate strong alignment with the fund’s objectives and meaningful, wider impact on the NTU campus community.
