The MENDAKI Education Symposium 2020

COVID-19 has changed many aspects of our lives, and it has brought about a pressing need more than ever for lifelong learning to adapt to this ever-changing world. Simultaneously, there has also been increased recognition on the importance of supporting learners from a young age to better prepare them for the future. Themed Nurturing from Young: Foundations for Lifelong Learning in Post-COVID World, Yayasan MENDAKI, in collaboration with the National Institute of Education (NIE), organised the virtual MENDAKI Education Symposium from 22 – 24 July 2020, to facilitate knowledge sharing and discussions on how to strengthen children’s learning. The symposium attracted more than 1,300 local and overseas educators, practitioners, researchers and parents.

A total of five sharing sessions were delivered online across the three days. The first session was attended by Mr Zaqy Mohamad, the Senior Minister of State in the Ministry for Manpower and Ministry for Defence.

Featuring presentations and panel discussions by NIE faculty staff and invited practitioners, the sessions covered various topics ranging from teacher-child interactions to children’s self-control skills (see graphics below).

They were:

  • Dr Aishah Abdul Rahman, “How can neuroscience inform education and learning?”
  • Dr Anne Rifkin-Graboi, “How do we help children feel safe and ready to learn?”
  • Dr Beth O’Brien and Associate Professor Viniti Vaish, “How do we teach our children to be bilingual at home and in school?”
  • Dr Nirmala Karuppiah, “How do we improve the quality of teacher-child interactions in the preschool classroom?”
  • Dr Ng Ee Lynn, “How do we help children develop self-control skills?”
