Assistant Professor Victor Lim Fei speaks at the First Biennial International Symposium on Multimodal Texts in Schools and publishes a journal article

On 17 December 2022, Asst Prof Victor Lim Fei, from NIE’s English Language and Literature Academic Group (ELL AG), was invited by the Faculty of Education, University of Koper, Slovenia, and Department of Languages and Literatures, Communication, Education and Society, University of Udine, Italy to speak at the First Biennial International Symposium on Multimodal Texts, where he gave a presentation titled “From Literacy to Multiliteracies: Engaging with Multimodal Texts in Singapore Schools”.

He also published a journal article titled “Thinking and Talking About Digital News in the Singapore Secondary English Classroom: a Pilot Study”. This paper is based on a study to develop a pedagogic metalanguage as a resource to support teachers’ thinking and talking about digital news texts in two secondary English classrooms in Singapore. The study collects data via lesson observation, interviewing with teachers and focus group discussions, where the findings informed the design of a larger research project on multimodal literacy in Singapore. Some implications from the study include highlighting the importance of meeting the diverse learning needs of the students and building on the recognition both students and teachers have on the value of multimodal literacy, as well as point to the importance of strengthening assessment and feedback for the students even as teachers design for more opportunities for students’ multimodal meaning-making.
