Shaping the Future of Learning in Singapore

NIE Strategic Education Research Agenda (2023–2027)

Over the next five years (FY2023–2027), the National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore will drive the Fifth Tranche of the Education Research Funding Programme (ERFP). Building on 20 years of progress from the first four tranches, NIE is strengthening the foundations of education research, innovation, and development to address both current and emerging needs in Singapore’s education system.

NIE’s Integral Role in Singapore’s Education Eco-system

Through close collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MOE), schools, educators, and international experts, NIE continues to lead Singapore’s education research landscape. At the heart of our role, we continue to ensure that evidence-based research forged with educators, learners, and partner institutions and organisations are better prepared for a rapidly changing world.

Our strategic research agenda focuses on four key priorities:

  1. Teaching and Learning Excellence – advancing pedagogy and classroom practices.
  2. Student Development and Wellbeing – supporting holistic growth and at-risk learners.
  3. Progression and Pathways – creating flexible, inclusive learning journeys.
  4. Education Ecosystem Development – building capacity, policy, and partnerships for sustainable impact.

By shifting from an academic-only focus to preparing learners for life, work, and citizenship, NIE is committed to shaping the next phase of future-ready education in Singapore and beyond.
