萧文耀画展——‘溫柔的遮蔽’

Lianhe Zaobao showcased the debut solo exhibition of 26-year-old artist Joel Seow, titled "Gentle Shading," an exploration of contemporary expressive painting. Seow's artworks delve deeply into personal symbols and autobiographical experiences, seamlessly weaving together elements of family, living spaces, and personal memories within his canvases. Within these compositions, spaces, objects, and characters fluidly oscillate between solidity and transience, capturing the complex interplay of tenderness and indifference, closeness and isolation prevalent in the context of modern urban life. Despite our innate yearning for intimacy, there remains an enigmatic veil that forever shrouds full comprehension.

Joel, a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design in the United States and a 2022 finalist for the AXA Art Award from the New York Academy of Art, is currently pursuing further studies at the National Institute of Education in Singapore. In addition to his oil paintings on canvas, Xiao also employs Egg Tempera, a medium popular during the early Renaissance. The incorporation of egg into paint serves as a preservative, ensuring longevity. The interplay of light and shadow in his portrait "Tempera on Board Laws of Physics (2022)" imparts a profound sense of drama and depth to the artwork.
