Prof Mike Chia Presents at Two Webinars and Interviewed by the Straits Times
Prof Michael Chia, from NIE’s Physical Education and Sports Science Academic Group (PESS), was interviewed by the Straits Times and presented at two webinars on findings from his project investigating the effects of digital media in early childhood, titled “International Ipreschooler Surveillance Study Among Asians and otheRs (IISSAAR): screen media use and off-screen behaviours among preschool children living in selected urban cities in some countries in Asia and elsewhere”.
Prof Chia was interviewed by the Straits Times on his research on the effects of excessive screen use on young children. He also provided tips on balancing a child’s screen and non-screen time, such as planning structured time and activities daily without digital devices. Read more here.
On 31 July 2021, Prof Chia, Mr Terence Chua, PESS Research Assistant (RA) and Ms Kalaivani Ramachandran, RA at the Office of Education Research, presented at a parent education webinar organised by PCF Sparkletots on the “Digital and Non-Digital Habits of Preschool Children in Singapore—Implications for Parents”. Prof Chia also presented at a webinar organised by NUS Giving on 20 August titled “Eating Healthy and Growing Resilient in the Digital Age”. In both webinars, Prof Chia discussed the implications of the pandemic on young children’s digital media use, and provided suggestions on how parents can address these behaviours.
