New Education Normal Webinar Series: Scripting and Orchestration of Learning Communities

The New Education Normal Webinar Series continues at the Office of Education Research (OER)! On 13 November 2020, Prof Jim Slotta, Professor of Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, spoke on “Scripting and Orchestration of Learning Communities: Moving from classrooms to blended inquiry designs”.

Prof Slotta presented on his decade of research concerned with establishing and supporting communities of learners in K-12 and higher education classrooms, that led to the development of the “Knowledge Community and Inquiry” (KCI) model. In the past year, research has been influenced by the pandemic, with studies being forced to adapt to new online or hybrid contexts, informing the understanding of how to support learning across different contexts and environments. The KCI model, Prof Slotta asserted, can serve as a productive resource of the design of online and hybrid courses, ensuring that students are engaged, connected with peers, and learning with a sense of collective identity.

The session concluded with a question and answer session moderated by Dr Teo Chew Lee, Programme Director of the Learning Sciences and Innovation Research Programme and Senior Research Scientist at OER, and was attended by approximately 46 participants.
