Impact from Dr Teo Chew Lee’s Research Findings

Research findings from Principal Investigator Dr Teo Chew Lee’s, Senior Research Scientist at the Office of Education Research (OER), research project “Uncovering the Process and Outcome of Computer-Supported Collaborative-Learning using Multimodal Learning Analytics: New Environments and Assessment for CSCL in the learning continuum” have informed a symposium presentation, a conference paper, and a website publication.

Dr Teo presented at the NTU-MIND Symposium on 1 October 2020. The symposium, themed “Learning & Memory”, saw Dr Teo speak on “Quantifying Complex Indicators of Knowledge Building Discourse from Multiple Data Source” and the ongoing multimodal research in understanding how children lean using the knowledge building pedagogy undertaken in the project to over 100 participants.

Dr Teo was also involved in the conference paper submitted to and presented at the Virtual Knowledge Building Summer Institute. The paper, presented on 20 November 2020, is titled “A case study of emotion analysis for collective idea improvement”. It was written and presented by Dr Aloysius Ong, OER Research Fellow, Dr Teo, Mr Samuel Tan, Senior Specialist at MOE’s Educational Technology Division, Assoc Prof Kim Mi Song from Western University’s Curriculum Studies and Studies in Applied Linguistic Academic and Research Cluster, and Faye Juliano. The paper shared preliminary findings from the project where students’ emotions were analysed using automated detection software while the students engaged in collective idea improvement.

Lastly, “Beyond Threaded Discussions: Learning with Knowledge Building Analytics” written by Dr Alwyn Lee, OER Research Fellow, and Dr Teo was published on the Society for Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR) Nexus website. The paper introduces new kinds of learning analytics that support Knowledge Building discourse in online chat and threaded forum discussions.
