Education in the City "Supporting Special Educational Needs (SEN) Children in Mainstream Classrooms"

In collaboration with the National Library Board, the Office of Education Research hosted the last installment in the Education in the City webinar series on 29 November 2021. The theme of the webinar was “Supporting Special Educational Needs (SEN) Children in Mainstream Classrooms” and the speakers shared how we can create an inclusive and supportive learning environment for children with special needs.

The webinar started with a sharing by  Dr Tan Chee Soon, Lecturer from NIE’s Psychology and Child & Human Development Academic Group. She introduced her research on helping students with reading difficulties and shared techniques that can be used to cultivate the love for reading in children. Dr Tan shared that she believes every child can read and parents and educators can serve as agents to help children cultivate the love towards reading.

Ms Madinah Begum, Educational Advisor and Senior Educational Therapist, Dyslexia Association of Singapore, then discussed the socio-emotional aspect of learning. Ms Begum highlighted the importance of effective communication with the child and shared how parents and educators can look after the socio-emotional well-being and overall mental health of these children with SEN.

The session concluded with an engaging question and answer segment, moderated by Dr Wong Hwei Ming, Research Scientist, Centre of Research in Pedagogy and Practice, and was attended by approximately 70 people.
