Education in the City: Strategies for Reading and Learning in Current Times

An Education in the City webinar on “Strategies for Reading and Learning in Current Times” was held on 26 July 2021, jointly organised by the National Library Board (Singapore) and the Office of Education Research, NIE.

Assoc Prof Loh Chin Ee, Deputy Head (Research) at NIE’s English Language and Literature Academic Group, started the webinar with her talk on “Independent Reading as Strategy for Teen Reading”, where she discussed the importance of independent reading, the possible challenges of encouraging independent reading, and how both parents and teachers have a part to play in creating an ecology of reading for teens.

Ms Sarah Mounsey, Director of Libraries at Dulwich College (Singapore), then spoke on “Strategies for Reading and Learning in Current Times”, focusing on promoting reading amongst children from ages 7 – 11. Some of Ms Mounsey’s recommendations included conducting a classroom survey to find out student reading preferences, inviting book authors to speak to the students, or even just ensuring that there are books available for all reading abilities.

The webinar wrapped up with an engaging question and answer segment, moderated by Ms Joyceline See Tully, co-founder of Pepper Dog Press and children’s book author. In total, the webinar saw approximately 179 attendees.
