Dr Wong Lung Hsiang speaks at eight different events on The Applications of (Generative) Artificial Intelligence in Education

Dr Wong Lung Hsiang, Senior Education Research Scientist at the Centre of Research in Pedagogy and Practice (CRPP), was invited to speak on the applications of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education at the following events.

  1. On 30 October 2023, Dr Wong led a hands-on ChatGPT workshop for over 60 teachers of various language courses (including Chinese, Malay, Bahasa Indonesia, Japanese, Arabic, French, German, and Spanish) at the Ministry of Education Language Centre (MOELC) Novena Campus. 


  2. Invited Keynote Speaker at the annual workplan seminar of the Mother Tongue Language Branch (MLTB), Curriculum Planning and Development Division (CPDD), Ministry of Education (MOE) on 8 November 2023. The seminar, led by Mdm Heng Boey Fong, CPDD Director of Mother Tongue Languages, was attended by over 120 MLTB leaders and curriculum specialists.


  3. On 8 November 2023, Dr Wong shared insights into applying ChatGPT in Chinese Language teaching, learning, and assessment at the annual professional development symposium, with more than 50 Chinese Language teachers from school cluster S7 who attended the symposium.


  4. On 24 November 2023, Dr Wong gave a talk on the general use of ChatGPT in teaching and learning to all teachers at Ai Tong Primary School before a generative AI workshop conducted by their Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department. 


  5. On 30 November 2023, he delivered a relevant webinar to over 80 faculty members and students at College of Future Education, Beijing Normal University (Zhuhai Campus). The webinar coincided with the first anniversary of the public release of ChatGPT-3.


  6. Dr Wong was invited to speak at the International Conference on Computers in Education (ICCE) in Matsue, Japan, from 4 till 8 December 2023. Dr Wong presented a conference paper titled “Effects of a Machine Learning-empowered Chinese Character Handwriting Learning Tool on Rectifying Legible Writing in Young Children: A Pilot Study”, co-authored by team members from the National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the National University of Singapore (NUS). The paper was nominated for the Best Technical Design Paper Award. Dr Wong presented another conference paper titled “Empowering Language Learners: Harnessing Computer-Based Writing for Enhanced Chinese Language Proficiency”, co-authored by co-Principal Investigators from NIE and the Mother Tongue Language Branch (MTLB), Curriculum Planning and Development Division (CPDD), Ministry of Education (MOE).

    Dr Wong also participated in two panel discussions and led a pre-conference workshop at the ICCE titled “Towards a Collaborative Vision for Redesigning Education for Harmonious and Thriving Educational Futures in Asia and Beyond: Will Seamless IDC Theory lead us there?”, “Mobile Learning Reflections on the Past and Visions for the Future”, as well as “Towards the Practice of Seamless Interest-Driven Creators (SIDC) Theory with Technological Supports” respectively. Having played a crucial role in the ICCE conference series for the past decade, including serving as the conference chair in 2018 and 2019 and the International Program chair in 2013, Dr Wong contributed as a conference consultant in this year's edition. Moreover, he co-founded a new program component, the Showcase of Advancements in Technology-Enhanced Learning in Underrepresented Countries (SATELUC).


  7. On 5 December 2023, Dr Wong was invited to speak at the International Congress on Science Education and Technology (CISETC) 2023, where he delivered a keynote titled “Charting the Pedagogical Odyssey of ChatGPT: Beyond the Illusion of Novelties”. The talk explored the transformative impact of Generative AI in education, reshaping human-machine intellectual partnerships within Bloom's Taxonomy. Using case studies in Second Language Learning, he illustrated prompts and activity designs grounded in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) theories, emphasizing the seamless integration of teaching, learning, and formative assessment. 


  8. On 16 December 2023, Dr Wong presented a keynote address titled “Beyond the Horizon: An Academic and Practical Exploration of Seamless Blended Learning” at the International Conference of Educational Innovation through Technology (EITT) 2023 in Fuzhou, China. The talk synthesised findings from seamless learning research projects conducted over the past decade, discussing how design frameworks and principles have informed the blended learning initiative and practice supported by the personal digital learning program launched in 2021 at all local secondary schools and junior colleges.
