Dr Teo Chew Lee Presents on Knowledge Building in Schools and at Home

 Dr Teo Chew Lee, Senior Research Scientist at the Office of Education Research (OER), shared her research on knowledge building theory and pedagogy across various meetings and events. She led two Networked Learning Community (NLC) online meetings and presented the keynote at a webinar series for teachers and education researchers in Singapore, and conducted an online symposium at the International Conference of the Learning Sciences 2020 (ICLS2020) for education researchers across the globe.

 

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Singapore moved to a Home-Based Learning (HBL) approach, presenting new challenges in teaching and learning within online environments. In the months of April and June, Dr Teo was involved in collaborative efforts with over 30 teachers and researchers in the NLC, leading online meetings to develop and share strategies and tips to foster knowledge building during the HBL period.

 

Additionally, along with Dr Peter Seow, OER Research Scientist, Dr Teo presented the keynote at the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Professional Development (PD) Series Webinar on 12 June 2020, to teachers from Teck Whye Primary School. They spoke on “Remote Teaching and Learning: New Opportunities for Curriculum Innovation and ICT Integration” and shared new approaches in curriculum innovation and ICT integration (such as weaving synchronous and asynchronous technology) that would allow for active engagement from the students.

 

Dr Teo’s research in knowledge building theory and pedagogy extends beyond the borders of our country. She has also conducted a symposium on “Emotional and Cognitive Affordances of Collaborative Learning Environments” at ICLS2020 on 22 June 2020, with Mr Andy Ng, Head of the Gifted Education Programme at St. Hilda’s Primary School. She spoke to an international group of teachers, scholars, and researchers on the importance of social-emotional cognition in the process of knowledge building and the processes by which this can be implemented in both subject-based and non-subject-based lessons in schools.
