Dr Teo Chew Lee Conducts a Workshop and Presents Five Papers on Knowledge Building
Dr Teo Chew Lee, Senior Research Scientist at the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice, has conducted a workshop on Knowledge Building (KB), and presented five papers at the Knowledge Building Summer Institute (KBSI) 2021.
On 16 September 2021, Dr Teo conducted a workshop at Nanyang Polytechnic titled “Strategies for the Classroom: Students working as a Knowledge Building Communities”. She introduced the KB pedagogy and principles to the teachers at Nanyang Polytechnic, and provided suggestions on how KB can be put into practice.
The KBSI 2021 was held from 19 to 20 November, and Dr Teo presented five papers:
- Paper 1, titled “Engaging students in real world problem of sustainable living: A case study of knowledge building design studio”, shared how students were able to advance their understanding of real-world issues on sustainability collectively through synchronous and asynchronous discussions with scientists, researchers and their peers.

- Paper 2 titled “Exploring design of teachers knowledge building metaspace to support asynchronous cross-communities collaboration”, shared the design of a metaspace for teachers to collaborate and support each other in their knowledge building efforts.

- Paper 3 titled “A Principle-based Approach on Curriculum, Ideas, Learning Analytics and Knowledge Building: A Case Study of a Secondary History Class” shared a case study of how a teacher used analytics from Knowledge Forum to support his students in their learning about History.

- Paper 4 titled “A Phenomenological Study into Curiosity and Confusion in Collective Idea Improvement among Elementary Students” shared the phenomena of students’ experiences of curiosity and confusion during the idea improvement process in a knowledge building classroom.

- Paper 5 titled “Learning Analytics Goes to School: Shifting the Paradigm from Student-Centered Design to Student-Led Design” shared how learning analytics were brought into school where students utilised these analytics to advance their own idea improvement.

These presentations were supported by research findings from the projects “Leveraging Leadership to Sustain the Dynamic Professional Development and Identities of Preschool Teachers: The case for Knowledge Building Community (KBC)”, and “Developing 21st Century Assessment and Environment for Teachers and Students: The Case of Knowledge Building Pedagogy & Technology”, on which Dr Teo is co-Principal Investigator.
