Dr Nirmala Karuppiah publishes a journal article on parents’ perception of play and holistic development in Singapore preschools in the Journal of Childhood, Education & Society
Dr Nirmala Karuppiah, Head of Education at the Centre for Research in Child Development, has published a paper on parents’ perception of play and holistic development in Singapore preschools in the Journal of Childhood, Education & Society. The journal article, titled “What are Singapore parents’ perception of play in the early years?”, revealed that most Singapore parents understood and recognised the importance of play and holistic development in the early years. The findings also revealed that some parents prefer preschools that helps prepare their children for the primary school curriculum. Parents, who participated in the study, shared a list of factors that would influence their support for children’s play and there is a general sentiment that they could benefit from parent education programmes. This exploratory study highlighted the importance of the school-family-community partnership in the education of young children in Singapore.
