Asst Prof Victor Lim Fei Publishes an Article and Speaks on Multimodality

Asst Prof Victor Lim Fei, from NIE’s English Language and Literature Academic Group, has published a journal article and was an invited speaker at a online workshop on multimodality. The publication and workshop discussion were informed by findings from Asst Prof Lim’s research project “Integrating Multiliteracies into the English Language Classroom: Developing an Instructional Approach to Teach Multimodal Literacy (Critical Viewing and Effective Representing of Multimodal Texts)”.

The journal article, titled “Children’s experiences with a transmedia narrative: Insights for promoting critical multimodal literacy in the digital age”, was published in Discourse, Context & Media and was co-authored by Dr Emilia Djonov, Macquarie University, and Dr Chiao-I Tseng, University of Bremen. The article discusses children’s engagement with transmedia narratives (where the same story is presented through various media modes such as book, film, and interactive apps) to develop concepts and frameworks for critical multimodal analysis of texts for use with young learners.

Asst Prof Lim also was an invited speaker at the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Multimodality: From Semiotics to Intelligent Systems Online Workshop on 14 June 2021, where he took part in the discussion on “AI and Multimodality: Learning and Knowledge”. The workshop aimed to identify common ground between the fields of AI and Multimodality to explore possibilities for interdisciplinary interactions, and was organised in a joint collaboration between the University of Cambridge and University College London.
