Asst Prof Lim Fei Victor Invited to Speak at Four Events and Publishes Journal Article and Book Chapter on Multimodality

Asst Prof Lim Fei Victor, from NIE’s English Language and Literature Academic Group (ELL), was invited to speak at four events in November 2021, and published a journal article and book chapter on multimodality.

Asst Prof Lim was invited to speak on:

• “Conducting a Multimodal Study: A Systemic Functional Approach” for the English Language and Literature Study Program, Faculty of Language and Literature Education, Universitas Pendidikan, Bandung, Indonesia on 16 November.
• “Digital multimodal texts: Systemic Functional Linguistic approaches to teaching and learning” for the Multimodal Communication Course, Institute of Education, University College London on 16 November.
• “How to Conduct a Multimodal Discourse Analysis?” by the Department of Applied Foreign Languages, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology on 29 November.
• “Designing Online Learning with Semiotic Technologies: A Multimodal Perspective”, Provost Professional Development Webinar, Zayed University, United Arab Emirates on 30 November.

The article, titled “Curriculum and assessment mismatch: Examining the role of images in literacy assessments” is co-authored by Ms Tan Jia Min, former ELL Research Assistant, and published in the Australian Journal of Language and Literacy. It examines the role of images in literacy assessments, more specifically assessment items in the visual text comprehension in Singapore’s national examinations, the GCE O’ Level and the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), for the English Language exam, as well as the literacy components of PISA and PIRLS reading items.

With Dr Toh Weimin, former ELL Research Fellow, Asst Prof Lim published a book chapter on “Developing a Metafunctional Framework for Educational Apps” in Multimodality in English Language Learning, which provides research-based knowledge on the use, production and assessment of multimodal texts in the teaching and learning of English as an Additional Language (EAL).

These publications and presentations were based on research findings from Asst Prof Lim’s projects on “Integrating Multiliteracies into the English Language Classroom: Developing an Instructional Approach to Teach Multimodal Literacy (Critical Viewing and Effective Representing of Multimodal Texts)” and “Multimodality and Pedagogy (MaP): A Systematic Review”.
