Assoc Prof Mukhlis Abu Bakar Speaks on Nurturing Children’s Bilingual Development
Assoc Prof Mukhlis Abu Bakar, Asst Head (Malay) of the Asian Languages and Cultures Academic Group at NIE, participated in a panel discussion at the Asian Festival of Children’s Content 2021 on 27 May. The panel, titled “Memupuk Perkembangan Dwibahasa Kanak-kanak melalui Buku Dwibahasa (Nurturing Children’s Bilingual Development through Bilingual Books)”, featured Assoc Prof Mukhlis and Ms Norlin Samat, author of the bilingual children’s book series Ally’s Adventures, and was moderated by Ms Jumaini Ariff, author and storyteller. It explored bilingual books and strategies employed in the creation and teaching process for these books that can help young children cultivate a love for the Malay language. Assoc Prof Mukhlis’s sharing at the session was based on his research project “Learning to be Biliterate in English and Malay using Dual Language Books”.
