Henry David Hochstadt Early Childhood Education Doctor In Education (HDHECE EdD) Research Scholarship

The HDHECE EdD Research Scholarship has been set up from the HDHECE Endowment Fund which is a gift from Mr Herman Hochstadt, the eldest son of Mr Henry David Hochstadt and a Pro-Chancellor of the Nanyang Technological University.

The fund has been set up with the aim of supporting development and research for the enhancement and sustainability of quality practices for early childhood education, especially within the Singapore context. This scholarship aligns with the fund’s aim in supporting EdD students whose research can contribute to the development, enhancement and sustainability of quality practices in early childhood education.

Below are the eligibility criteria to apply for the scholarship:

  • You must be a part-time or full-time EdD student at NIE.
  • You must have completed all your six EdD courses with a minimum of B and CGPA 3.5 for all the courses.
  • You have completed your EdD dissertation proposal seminar report with one of the following outcomes:
    • The Dissertation Seminar Panel (DSP) has approved for you to undertake fieldwork subject to IRB approval.
    • The DSP has recommended that you undertake revisions on the research proposal to the satisfaction of your supervisor before proceeding with the fieldwork. If this is the case, your supervisor's approval needs to be given that he/she is satisfied with the revisions.

$18,000 each for up to two EdD students

The Selection Committee will decide on your application for the scholarship based on the following:

  • Your academic record
  • Your EdD dissertation proposal seminar report
  • Your introductory letter on the research project and how it can contribute to the development, enhancement and sustainability of quality practices for ECE
  • Research proposal (from your EdD dissertation seminar)
  • You show sufficient merit and timeliness in responding to questions from the Selection Committee

  • Applications open on 15 May and close on 31 July.  If you do not meet the eligibility criteria for a particular year, you can consider applying the following year.
  • Prepare your application dossier the following information and documents to be entered/uploaded on the application form:
    • Applicant’s details
    • A copy of your academic progress report for your EdD programme
    • A copy of your EdD dissertation proposal submitted for your dissertation seminar
    • An introductory letter on the research project which focuses on how your research does/can contribute to the development, enhancement and sustainability of quality practices in ECE. The word limit is 1000 (2 - 2.5 pages, single spaced)
    • The approval letter/email following your EdD dissertation seminar
    • Endorsement by your supervisor if the DSP has recommended that you undertake revisions on the research proposal to the satisfaction of your supervisor
