教学“潜力股” 社媒不可怕

The commentary writer, Dr Wong Lung Hsiang, Senior Education Research Scientist/NIE, noted that at the 11th Mother Tongue Language Symposium in end August, Min encouraged educators and parents to make good use of resources such as social media to stimulate children's interest in mother tongue learning.  The writer said that he had engaged in the research of the use of social media in teaching and learning for more than 10 years. However, when sharing these teaching design concepts with teachers in the past, many had displayed a negative reaction for fear that students who used social media might be exposed to undesirable content, misinformation or being bullied online. The writer said that actually, there were some education-oriented platforms such as Google Classroom that allowed teachers to open closed classes.  The writer noted some of the teaching tools, such as the Interactive Thinking Tools, in the Student Learning Space (SLS) platform developed by the MOE for all local primary and secondary schools had integrated social media functions, which allowed students to share, compare and give their comment with one another. In other words, social media could present new opportunities for teaching. The writer noted that in the past 10 years, there had been two major directions in the research on educational science and technology. One of the directions is the use of social media in teaching, which mainly selects suitable content from existing social media as learning materials for students. The second direction is to focus on making use of the social media's production, sharing and comment functions, where students are not only the audience of social media, but also the producers.
