‘தாய் மொழிகள் இன்னும் சிறப்பாக மேம்ப டுத்தப்பட வேண்டும்’

The educational progress among Singapore citizens and Permanent residents are on the increase. This is so especially as more are acquiring university degrees. Those who can read and write in many languages are higher now when compared to earlier. Those who are speaking English in their homes are also increasing in numbers.

This is good. But there are also other problems as this progresses. The number of degree holders will increase further. They might not get suitable jobs. Mother tongue traditions may face difficulties.

In the past ten years between 2010 and 2020, there is an increase in the number of university graduates. Among Indians it is 41.35%, Chinese 34.7% and Malays 10.8%  increase in the number of  graduates.

When mentioning about the language spoken in the homes, quite often, nearly half of the family members are speaking English. Commenting on this, Associate Professor Tan Chee Lay mentioned that mother tongue languages have to be developed well further.
