The NIE NTU, Singapore Launches AI@NIE To Transform Teaching And Learning For 21st Century Education
Artificial Intelligence @ NIE (AI@NIE) aims to transform teaching and learning with AI at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NIE NTU, Singapore) and advance research on the innovative and ethical applications of AI for education.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a vital role in 21st century education landscape. It is a key dimension of the NIE’s overarching strategy for Learning Initiatives for the Future of Education (LIFE@NIE™).
To support Ministry of Education (MOE) initiatives in harnessing the affordance of technology to enhance teaching and learning in school as well as to develop 21st Century Competencies among the learners, the NIE’s strategic focus on AI in education puts in place plans to create facilitative structures and an ecosystem in areas of teaching and learning, research and enablers to ensure viability and long-term sustainability of the Institute’s AI goals.
This initiative by the NIE prepares Singapore educators to lead and exemplify the use of AI in pedagogies effectively and ethically and curate relevant education courses for Singapore Educators and promote innovative mindsets and practices.
By advancing research on the innovative, ethical applications of AI for education and establishing the institution as a hub of innovation of AI for education, the NIE aims to develop, test and deploy viable products that transform pedagogical practices and address authentic problems in schools and educational institutions.
The NIE aims to create enablers by building a facilitative ecosystem to ensure the viability and long-term sustainability of the AI@NIE that forges interdisciplinary partnerships in education that create collaborative online and offline spaces for researchers to share ideas that could translate into future practices. The strategic move helps to develop strategies for faculty and staff professional development, recruitment, and a Data Empowerment programme to strengthen the institution’s capacity for AI in education.
The institution will also be hosting the 2022 International Network of Educational Institutes (INEI) meeting from 25 to 27 May 2022. The INEI is a consortium of 10 education institutes that seek to enhance the quality of education and provide leadership for educational development internationally. The meeting, themed "Bridging humanity and emerging technologies for the future of education" taking discussions around access to quality education deeper and focusing on the issues that have come up in priority arising from the global pandemic. Delegates from member institutions of the INEI will be joining the AI@NIE launch on 25 May as part of their three-day programme.
Professor Christine Goh, NIE Director shared that “the NIE’s vision is to lead the future of education. Advances in Artificial Intelligence have presented us with enablers for pedagogical innovations and data-driven decisions for education. We’ll leverage AI to deliver the NIE’s mission of inspiring learning, transforming teaching and advancing research.”
Associate Professor Tan Seng Chee, AI@NIE Implementation Committee Lead also shared that “the NIE takes a systemic approach towards achieving our AI for education goals. First, transforming teaching and learning with AI, and second, advancing research on the innovative and ethical applications of AI for education.”
