Susuri 4 fasa perkembangan Bahasa Melayu di S’pura

The article talks about the impact of the 4 phases of education in Singapore since 1965, namely the survival-driven phase from 1965-1978, the efficiency-driven phase from 1979-1996, the ability-driven phase from 1997-2011, and the student-centric, values-driven phase from 2012 till now, on the development of Malay Language. In spite of the fact that there are challenges to the development of the language, the acquisition planning has transformed the learning of the language with varied programmes run in schools. The article too introduces the concept of language planning by Cooper (1989) which includes status planning, corpus planning and acquisition planning, and its link to the development of Malay Language in Singapore.

This article is based on the talk given at the Malay Heritage Foundation’s Cendekia Lestari Series or Eminent Speaker Series 2021 titled Revering Malay Language, Maintaining English Language – Malay Language Planning Perspective in Singapore Approaching 2065.
