Dr Teo Chew Lee Conducts a Workshop, Presents at a Design Meeting and Publishes an Op-Ed and Journal Article
Dr Teo Chew Lee, Senior Research Scientist at the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice, has conducted a workshop, presented at a design meeting, and published an op-ed and a journal article on Knowledge Building (KB).
Dr Teo was invited to present the workshop by the E6 Singapore school cluster, to introduce KB to the teachers, so that teachers in the E6 school cluster could begin to identify possible entry points for KB in their lesson planning to increase student agency. The workshop, titled “Pilot to Practice: Rethinking School Processes with KB Principles”, was held on 8 and 15 July 2021.
On 19 August 2021, over 30 members of the global KB community came together for a design meeting to discuss ongoing work and future directions for the development of a Knowledge Forum assessment dashboard. Dr Teo and Dr Alwyn Lee, Research Fellow (RF) at the Office of Education Research (OER), were one of four teams from around the world who presented prototypes and ideas for individual and community-based analytics specially designed to assess and drive forward KB work. Their presentation on “Designing a collaborative dashboard for teacher Knowledge Building communities” was informed by findings from Dr Teo’s projects:
1) Leveraging Leadership to Sustain the Dynamic Professional Development and Identities of Preschool Teachers: The case for Knowledge Building Community (KBC);
2) Uncovering the Process and Outcome of Computer-Supported Collaborative-Learning (CSCL) using Multimodal Learning Analytics: New Environments and Assessment for CSCL in the learning continuum; and
3) Developing 21st Century Assessment and Environment for Teachers and Students: The Case of Knowledge Building Pedagogy & Technology
Published in TODAY Online, the op-ed is co-authored by Assoc Prof Tan Seng Chee, Assoc Dean (Graduate Education by Research) at the Office of Graduate Studies and Professional Learning. Titled “ Why AI can better help students as a learning buddy and not as a teacher”, Dr Teo and Assoc Prof Tan discuss how an artificial intelligence learning companion can be used to support interactions to identify key topics of a discussion to support cognitive development, social interactions, collaborative learning, emotional engagements and student agency.
With Dr Manasi Pande, OER RF, Dr Teo co-authored the paper “Knowledge Building and Young Children: Learning Sciences and Early Childhood Pedagogy”, published in the Association for Early Childhood Educators (Singapore)’s Early Educators Journal. The article encourages the use of KB in early childhood education to help students own the learning outcomes and processes.
