Dr Sun Baoqi, Associate Professor Csilla Weninger and Associate Professor Loh Chin Ee publish a journal article in the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy

Dr Sun Baoqi, Education Research Scientist at the Centre for Research in Child Development, Assoc Prof Csilla Weninger, Head, and Assoc Prof Loh Chin Ee, Deputy Head (Research) at the English Language and Literature Academic Group (ELL AG), published a journal article titled “Because I have my phone with me all the time” in the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy. This article explores whether adolescents access the news and if so, via what technologies, and the factors that influence their news access. Findings show that adolescents prefer to read the news online and that older adolescents (aged 15 – 17 years old) read more than younger adolescents (aged 13 – 14 years old). Findings show that adolescents prefer to read news online and that older adolescents read more than younger adolescents. Factors shaping access to news include technological (portability, personalization, curation, and notifications), social (families, peers, and schools as sponsors), and personal factors (active seeking of news vs. incidental news exposure).
