Dr Kenneth Y T Lim publishes in the Journal of Educational Computing Research

Dr Kenneth Y T Lim, Research Scientist at the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice, NIE, is one of a team of authors who have recently published in the SAGE Journal of Educational Computing Research (impact factor 3.088) on the “Longitudinal Effects in the Effectiveness of Educational Virtual Field Trips”.

Dr Lim’s co-authors include those from the Emerging Analytics Center, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and the Center for Immersive Experiences, Pennsylvania State University. 

Together, they successfully published their paper, which is of relevance in the context of Safe Management Measures associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, which have curtailed the degree to which teachers are able to plan and conduct fieldwork with their students. 

The paper that Dr Lim contributed focused on undergraduate geoscience students who had attended two temporally separated sessions through desktop virtual reality (dVR) or immersive virtual reality (iVR). The team’s results show a critical interaction between VR condition and repeated participation in virtual fieldtrips indicating that longitudinal exposure to virtual fieldtrips improves knowledge performance more when learning in iVR than through dVR. These results suggest that repeated use of iVR may be beneficial in sustaining students’ emotional engagement and compensating the initial deficiency in their objective learning outcomes compared to other less immersive technologies.
