Dr Chen Mo publishes a journal article and a conference proceedings paper on special needs
Dr Chen Mo, Education Research Scientist at the Centre for Research in Child Development has published a journal article in the Journal of Advances in Autism, as well as a conference proceedings paper for the 7th International Researchers Club Conference on Science, Engineering and Technology (IRC-SET) 2021.
The journal article, titled “Reducing perseverative requesting and other problem behavior in a young girl with autism: a sequentially implemented intervention package”, featured a case study where it used a sequentially implemented intervention package which consists of three components (i.e., a tolerance for delay to reinforcement, choice-making, and visual schedule) to address perseverative requesting and other problem behaviour maintained by access to preferred items/activities in a young girl with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The findings revealed that the girl demonstrated higher self-control skills (i.e., delaying access to preferred items/activities, choosing more preferred items/activities with delayed access over less preferred ones with immediate access, completing tasks before having access to preferred items/activities) with a reduction of perseverative requesting or other problem behaviour.
The conference proceedings paper, titled “Investigating the Public’s Experiences and Knowledge of Communicating with People with Dementia”, surveyed 259 Singaporeans to understand the severity of the lack of communications skills with patients with dementia, which contributed to the increased loneliness felt by these patients. The results showed that Singaporeans generally lack technical communication skills when conversing with patients with dementia, despite many of them who have had experiences communicating with these patients. The results also contributed to previous research done on society’s treatment towards patients with dementia and offered possible ways that Singapore could adopt to be more inclusive towards the dementia community.
