Dr Astrid Schmied participates in the 11th International Brain Research Organization World Congress of Neuroscience

Dr Astrid Schmied, Education Research Scientist at the Science of Learning in Education (SoLEC), participated in the 11th International Brain Research Organization World Congress of Neuroscience organised by the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) and the Spanish Neuroscience Society (SENC) in Granada, Spain from the 9th till the 13th of September 2023, where she shared her work on “Co-production of Neuroscience of Learning Resources for Asynchronous Teaching in Higher Education”.

This project explores the efficacy and appropriateness of two neuroscience of learning sets of resources designed for asynchronous learning and for use within Higher Education contexts. The resources are envisaged to include introductory materials for the teaching of two key cognitive domains within the broader topic of learning, i.e., memory and attention, with the intention that these resources will be utilised by a wide and interdisciplinary range of students who might not have a background in these topics. The 3-stage co-production project included (1) literature searches, (2) curricula design and content creation, and (3) evaluation, and stemmed from cross-institutional collaboration between the Imperial College in the UK and the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, which included academics and student partners from both regions. Specifically, this cross-cultural collaboration included all aspects of the materials’ production process, spanning research, inception, storyboarding, and design.

Our educational design project was trifold: to (1) address individual learning inequities resulting from face-to-face to fully online/hybrid/blended learning modalities, (2) enhance student self-efficacy and self-regulated learning in a credible, research-informed and research-led way, and (3) collect and share transferable data exploring applicability across Higher Educational contexts. Preliminary results from stages (1) literature searches and (2) curricula design and content creation indicate that student centred user design, interactivity and non-disposable resource creation should be considered.
