The write-up highlights my short story “Razi” that been selected as the sole story for One Story Project 2021-2022 under the auspices of National Reading Movement, National Library Board (NLB). One Story aims to make available to the Singapore general population short stories originally written in Tamil, Malay, Chinese, or English. The project also seeks to bring these stories to more readers beyond the language communities that they were originally written for. Originally written in Malay by Sa’eda Buang, a lecturer at the Asian Languages and Cultures AG, NIE, “Razi” can now be read in Tamil, Mandarin and English. “Razi” portrays a special needs child’s painful life journey, and his mother’s daily struggle and dilemma in bringing up and protecting her child from uncaring and misinformed society. “Razi” surfaces three main issues of love, empathy, and complexity of relationships. Advocating the awareness of and empathy for segments of community with special needs, “Razi” is now available in hard copy and online versions.
