Centre for Assessment & Evaluation (CAE): ERAS Conference & WERA Focal Meeting 2023

Assessment and Evaluation Symposium

On 22 & 23 November 2023, CAE took part in the Educational Research Association of Singapore International Conference and the World Education Research Association Focal Meeting (ERAS-WERA) 2023 held at the National Institute of Education / Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

This year's ERAS-WERA theme “Forging Ahead: Transforming Education in a Rapidly Changing World” explored educational issues of concern in a post-pandemic world. Under this theme, the Assessment and Evaluation team of CAE organised two symposiums titled "Shaping the Future of Classroom Assessment" and "The Role of Evaluation in Empowering Educators for Continuous Improvement" respectively.

Assessment Symposium: Shaping the Future of Classroom Assessment - 23 November 2023

(Presentation sharing from the Assessment team)

The landscape of classroom assessment is undergoing a transformative evolution, driven by the convergence of dynamic forces that may reshape the future of assessment in education. Whilst transformative changes to assessment are not new, we are now at a crossroads that may lead us in different directions for classroom assessment.

The Assessment team, featuring Dr Tay Hui Yong (NIE, LSA), Dr Chue Kah Loong (NIE, PCHD), Dr Amirhossein Rasooli (NIE, LSA), Dr Karen Lam and Dr Leong Wei Shin from MOE, presented four key trends and considerations that aimed at driving classroom assessment. They include involving students in assessments to empower their assessment literacy; leveraging learning progressions to achieve growth in student competencies; exploring assessment fairness through the lens of pre-service teachers and its implications; and lastly, harnessing educational technology for positive changes in classroom assessments.

Evaluation Symposium: The Role of Evaluation in Empowering Educators for Continuous Improvement - 22 November 2023

(Presentation sharing from the Evaluation team)

With more divergent educational programs and initiatives being undertaken in schools, researchers, educators and other stakeholders are invariably asking important questions about the extent to which these programs have been impactful in bringing about the intended change.

The Evaluation team consisting of AP Chong Wan Har (NIE, PCHD), Dr Jason Loh (NIE, ELL), Ms Michelle Tan (NIE, CAE) and Mr Mark Lee and Dr Liu Wei Cheng from MOE presented different facets of educational evaluation in Singapore and Asia with the intent to help researchers and educators obtain a nuanced overview on the state of work in the field. They provided an overview of 1) teacher educators' understanding about and perspectives of the role and state of Evaluation teaching in teacher preparation in NIE; 2) the use of evaluation theories in shaping evaluation practice in schools at Singapore MOE HQ, and 3) a research synthesis undertaken to examine the state and nature of educational evaluation in Asia.
