Assistant Professor Wang Jingyu Featured Across National Media on Lightning Safety and Weather Advisories

Assistant Professor Wang Jingyu was featured in Lianhe Zaobao and 8world for his expert commentary on lightning safety and weather advisories, following a fatal lightning incident at Pasir Ris Beach.

Asst Prof Wang explained that lightning remains one of the most difficult weather phenomena to forecast accurately, as thunderstorms can develop rapidly and warnings are based on probability rather than the exact location of a lightning strike. He noted that members of the public should not rely solely on official alerts, but should remain vigilant when outdoors, especially when dark clouds form or thunder is heard.

He also highlighted the risks of water-based activities during thunderstorms, as water conducts electricity and can allow electrical currents to travel over a distance. Asst Prof Wang advised the public to leave the water and seek proper shelter immediately when there are signs of lightning activity.

In the event of a lightning strike, he shared that bystanders should check if the victim is breathing and has a pulse, and begin CPR or use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), where available, while waiting for emergency services. Victims should only be moved if they remain in immediate danger.

Through his media comments, Asst Prof Wang helped explain the science behind lightning risks and reinforced the importance of public awareness, timely action, and personal safety during thunderstorms.
